Dal Fry Recipe: Dal Fry is very popular in Punjab. Often, if you halt in a restaurant while traveling, you must have enjoyed the dal fries. But do you know the same dish you can easily make at your home by using lentils? Before moving towards the recipe, we should know some basic points about the recipe.
In the Dal fries, some spices with green chilies, garlic, ginger are being added and then cooked. Now whenever you want to eat something good at lunch or dinner, make your favorite pulse of fries.
Dal Fry Recipe is one of the most famous pulses in India. This dish can be made in many ways, but it is made mostly with “tur dal” and “gram dal”.
The name of the Dal Fry Recipe got its name due to its method of making it. In most lentils recipes, the “Chhonk” or “tadka” is prepared later, but in this lentils recipe, the first step is to prepare “tadka” for dal fry and the boiled pulses are cooked in it.

Here is the list of the Ingredients, you required to make this delicious Dal Fry dish –
- Finely chopped coriander
- 3 small green green chilies
- 1 small spoon of coriander powder
- 1 spoon red cayenne powder
- 2 large spoons of garlic ginger paste
- 1 finely chopped or grated tomato
- 2 large finely chopped onions (you can cut them straight too)
- 2 small cardamoms
- 1 large cardamom
- 4 cloves
- 3 green chilies
- 1 curry leaf
- 1 small spoon of cumin seeds
- 1 small teaspoon of asafoetida
- Ghee according to the dish
- A salt according to taste
Here is the list of ingredients that are required for lentils/Dal:
- Turmeric Powder
- Urad (Urad ki dal) Lentils
- 2 larger tablespoons of moong dal
- 2 tablespoons of pulses of lentil
- 2 large grains gram dal
- The salt according to taste
Here is the step by step recipe to make “Dal Fry” at home –
Step 1- In the first step, of making delicious dal fry, first boil all the type of lentils, you are going to use in this recipe. Put the lentils in a pressure cooker and add half spoon of turmeric powder and a pinch of salt to it.
Step 2- Boil the lentils until you hear 3 whistles of the cooker. After that, let the pressure inside of cooker goes out. And when it is done then open the cooker and mix the pulses and keep it aside.
Step 3- In a meanwhile, heat oil in a pan and when the oil becomes hot, then add cumin seeds, asafetida in it and let them cook for 10-15 seconds. After waiting 10-15 seconds, add salt, cloves, small cardamoms, large cardamom, curry leaves, and green chilies.

Step 4- After cooking the spices for 30 seconds, you are required to put garlic ginger paste and green pepper in it. After that wait for 1 minute and let all these things be cooked.
Step 5- After waiting for 1 minute, now it is the time to add onion to the cooked spices and now cook the onion along with the spices until the onion turn to golden brown. When the onion turns brown add few more things to it. Add salt (according to the taste), red cayenne powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, and finely chopped tomato.
Step 6- Now, put some water in the mixture of onion, tomato, and other spices and cook for 5 to 8 minutes. After waiting for 5 to 8 minutes, add boiled lentils (dal’s) in the mixture on onion, tomato, and other spices. Then again allow the entire mixture to get cooked on a medium flame for around 8 to 10 minutes.
Step 7- After waiting for 8 to 10 minutes, check if the dish is ready or need some more time. If it looks done, then turn off the gas stove and serve your hot and delicious dal fry.
Step 8- For garnishing, you can use coriander leaves or any other thing according to your desire.
