Semolina Upma Recipe: Upma is one of the healthy foods that are very easy to make in the morning. Porridge, oats, parantha, poha, and upma do not acquire much time in preparation, which is why they are considered best for having in the breakfast. Upma is basically, a South Indian recipe that can be made in many ways. When upma is made using the rice, porridge, bread, and oats, it is called “Rava Upma”. And similarly when upma is made up using wheat and semolina as its nitty-gritty ingredients then it is known as “Semolina Upma” aka “Sooji Upma”.
People often like to eat it in the morning breakfast. This food is considered one of the healthy and nutritious foods. You can eat it by preparing it with evening tea.
The semolina upma further can be made in many ways. Like if you want to make it more healthy and nutritious then you can use the vegetables in it, like onions tomato and some other. On the other side if you want to have the simple upma then you can exclude vegetables. It means it is up to us whether we want to add the vegetables in our upma or not. Vegetables are not necessary.
I have used thick semolina to make this simile of semolina. The market provides both thick and thin swollen semolina.

Roasting semolina is one of the most important tasks when making a simile. Roast semolina until it becomes light and light brown.
Incorporate vegetables such as peas, carrots, beans, red pies, green capsicum, or any of these vegetables can be used. By adding vegetables its nutritional value increases, and in the morning it becomes a healthy breakfast.
The peanut and fried cashew in the dish is added so that the calories of this recipe are flavored, but the proteinogenic elements of cashew and chickpea are also eliminated. Use roasted peanut or cashew nuts in a dish. You can roast it in the microwave, if you do not use the microwave, it can also be roasted in a non-stick pan.
List of the ingredients to make Semolina Upma:
- 15-20 roasted peanuts or pieces of cashews
- 3-4 finely chopped green chilies (according to taste)
- 2 finely chopped onion
- 1 cup finely chopped vegetables (such as cabbages, peas, green capsicum, red pies, carrots, beans etc.)
- 2 cups semolina (sooji)
- 6 cups of water (If the semolina is too thick then the water is required more if it is thin then the water quantity should be less. I have added 6 cups of water in this recipe.)
- 2 tablespoon filtered sesame oil, peanut oil, any refined or filtered oil.
- 1 tsp mustard
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tbsp urad dal
- 1 tbsp gram dal
- 15-20 Curry leaves
- 2 teaspoon lemon juice
- Coriander leaves
- Grated coconut
- 2 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt (according to taste)
Step by Step Recipe of Semolina Upma at Home –
Step 1 – Heat 1 tsp oil in a pan and add semolina in it and roast it until the semolina becomes light and golden brown. Do not roast semolina on a high heat, roast it on medium flame or slow gas. When the semolina looks brown or golden brown then remove it in an empty utensil.
Step 2 – Put 2 tablespoons of oil in the same pan. Then, put the pan on the heat.
Step 3 – In the meanwhile, you can keep water on the heat. It will be somewhat faster. For this, you can put around 6 cups of water in it. And keep it on the medium flame.

Step 4 – Now it is the time to add the pulses and gram dal. As soon as the oil gets heated, you are required to put the gram dal and pulses in it.
Step 5 – Now it is the time to add the pulses and gram dal. As soon as the oil gets heated, you are required to put the gram dal and pulses in it.
Step 6 – In this step, you are required to add curry leaves and green pepper and let it be contracted. (If you don’t have curry leaves you need to buy it from the store since the fragrance of the curry leaves are especially used to enhance the fragrance of the dish).
Step 7 – In this step, you have to add the finely chopped onion. Also, you need to pour some salt on it. (Here by pouring salt, the onion will start getting soft).
Step 8 – Now add finely chopped vegetables and cook it for 1-2 minutes on high flame, stirring it with a spoon. (Note: Keep stirring the vegetables with the spoon or any ladle, to prevent the vegetables from over burning).
Step 9 – Now lower the gas and cover it for 2-3 minutes. Vegetables itself will be cooked with the steam.
Step 10 – Put roasted peanuts or cashew nuts in it. It can also be added in the last.
Step 11 – Now add hot boiled water and slow the gas or turn it off.
Step 12 – Now gradually put semolina in it and stir it with a spoon so that it does not get stick there. When putting semolina, either slow the gas or stop it. When all the semolina gets mixed with the water, then again turn off the gas stove (if it was not stopped earlier).
Step 13 – Now add lemon juice in it, pouring lemon juice makes the dish delicious and taste of the dish is increased.

Step 14 – Put sugar in it and mix it properly and let it cook for more 3-4 minutes on the low flame.
Step 15 – Your Upma is ready, now you can decorate it or garnish it with the green coriander leaves and finely grated coconut. Then Serve it with lemon or pickle.
